Update

The Bulletin Board

Hi fellow alums!

First an update as to what's up....last March, lost my job with Macy's because of down-sizing (current fad) and I have relocated (July 5th) to Alexandria, La to manage Marshalls store. It's not as glamorous as Macy's, but the pace and business has be great!  With the new job, lost personal days and vacation, thus missing the reunion.  Did talk to Andy Allen about the events, wish I could have been there.  I certainly enjoyed the pictures downloaded to site.  If anyone has additonal pictures, please send to vlopez18@yahoo.com.  Personnal update:  My daughter Sara, just graduated from University of Nebraska-Omaha and also got engaged (I need another job!).  The graduation gig and wedding planning were just dandy!  I'm hopeful that this little message find everyone doing well or at least recovering from all the events that have happened in our lives. Keep in touch and live like you mean it!  Vic.

The Bulletin Board

Closed Campus

It's been 35 years since John F. Kennedy College in Wahoo closed. Some in the community still hope to find a use for the wooded, picturesque campus. They have words of advice for Blair, which just saw its college close.
WAHOO -- On a brisk night in March 1971, Linda Collins stepped outside her Wahoo home and watched the stately three-story brick building -- where she had fallen in love with her husband, Michael, while producing and performing in theater productions -- burn.
"It was an absolutely gorgeous campus before Old Main burned," she said of her alma mater, John F. Kennedy College, which closed in 1975.
The college's third fire in two years left its students, faculty and staff heartbroken, said Carl Wirth, who serves as the historian for the college's unofficial alumni association.
"It was just very devastating, because that was the centerpiece of the campus," he said.
Within four years, the college had closed after failing to overcome financial challenges and increase its student enrollment.
Thirty-five years later, the campus remains a heavily wooded, picturesque place marred by dilapidated buildings whose windows largely are broken out and roofs are leaking.
It's a quiet place today, with much of the campus having been sold over the years to private interests.
A boys' home used some of the buildings for a few years in the 1990s. A medical center, physical therapist's office and real estate office are located on parts of the old campus.
Some of the land was sold to a housing developer, and a developer built condominiums for senior citizens on part of the campus.
Other businesses -- a substance abuse treatment center, an arcade game repair shop -- have looked into locating there but never did.
Three of the buildings remain empty.
As the community of Wahoo has watched the closure this summer of Dana College in nearby Blair, they have begun looking into possible solutions for their own aging campus.
At a July 15 community forum, people interested in the college gathered to talk about possible solutions. Mayor Jerry Johnson said he organized the forum to take place at the same time as a reunion of John F. Kennedy College alumni.
Several alumni who attended the reunion also attended the forum.
Johnson said it would be cost-prohibitive to restore most of the buildings on the campus. And, since much of the campus has been sold off, it's unlikely another educational institution would be interested in it, he said.
"We've got to determine if there is a possible use," he said of the college. "With the economy today, there's just not a lot of speculators out there."
And, with Dana College closing, any speculators interested in buying a site for an educational institution likely would look there first, Johnson said.
When John F. Kennedy College opened in 1965, it was one of three private colleges that opened in Nebraska around the same time. The Wahoo college stayed open longer than either of the other two: Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff and Pershing College in Beatrice.
Wirth suggested turning the land into a park and restoring the former president's house -- where the current owner of the property, Thomas Widlar, now lives -- into a library housing memorabilia from the college.
He said he and another alumnus have begun seeking grants and donations to collect and digitize printed memorabilia from the college.
"I really hope that the people of Wahoo are successful in some way to do something with the campus," he said.
Widlar said he has tried to find a buyer for the property for years and is in contact with potential buyers today, though he declined to elaborate.
He said he gained the property through a foreclosure in 1999 and moved to live on the campus in 2003.
"I've been trying to sell it since I got here," he said recently, standing on the front porch of the former president's house, now his home.
He said he realizes the property has become an eyesore but also criticized those who complain about the campus for not helping to do anything about it.
"I still think it's probably the nicest piece of property in Wahoo," Widlar said.
Johnson said he is considering calling together a facilities committee made up of public and private interests to examine possible solutions for the campus. He said it will be important for the community to think of non-traditional uses for the campus.
And he offered some advice to community members in Blair as they consider the fate of the Dana College campus.
"Don't hang onto that dream forever," he said of the idea of reusing the campus as a college. "I think that's what Wahoo did."

Post Reunion from Linda "Bucky" Collins

The Bulletin Board

As I am trying to catch up after this weekend and getting ready to leave tomorrow for several weeks on the east coast with our family I just wanted to bring you up to date regarding last week's reunion.  Of course, those of you who attended will receive this also but you will just have to bear with me.

We had a great turn out considering the economic situation in the country today. I'm sure that that kept some of you from attending as well as family obligations and all those other things that make our lives so busy.  We had over 90 attend the banquet on Saturday evening, Maly's Landing (Gap's) was packed on Friday evening as well as the country club on Thurs. nite and Sat. morning.

It was the first reunion for some of you and I hope that you are glad that you found us or we found you, however it happened, and that you had a good time.  It was great to see you!!!!!!!!

We were able to have Coach Cerv, Connie Dillow, Arv & Barb Reynolds, Lee Kallstrom join us as well as former staff members Mert and Sally Oden, Mary Ann Rohman and former Board Member Garwood Anderson's wife Dorothy as our special guests.

The mayor of Wahoo Jerry Johnson and his wife Arlene also joined us.  He welcomed us and brought us up to date with what is happening with the campus.  Unfortunately, not very much at this time, but we have some very interested alums and I have put it in the very capable hands of Michelle Miller Han*censored* to try and put something together and work with Jerry.  Jerry and his wife attended the campus when it was Luther College so he has as much of an interest as we do.

John and Mary Jo Landen were so generous to underwrite the band that we danced to.  They were absolutely fantastic, they play at a club in Omaha on a regular basis, and I told them that they may have another groupie in me.  Thank you again John and Mary Jo for your fabulous contribution to the evening.

Sandy Bronson Ediger represented the Bronson family, a family that was so active and important to JFK.
Of course I informed you previously of the loss of Jim in May and it was so good to have her there.  It would have not been the same for many of us had she not attended.  We missed Bill because so many reunion nights were spent on the Bronson's deck after the "formal events" were over.  Thank you for all of those memories Bronson's.

I know that some of you are still having trouble accessing the database and making postings on the bulletin board on www. kennedycollege.com.  I would love you to post on there so if you have a problem registering please get in touch with Lynette Djernes Goldberger at lynette@thedgfc.org or her son Dory at admin@kennedycollege.com.  You must be registered and have a password to access the database of make postings and the password that you have from the old site will not work.  If you can't get ahold of them e-mail me and I will pass it on to them.

That's all I have for now.  We are working on getting pixs on the site so if you have some get ahold of Lynette or Dory also and hopefully they can help get them on for you.

Linda "Bucky" Collins

Post Reunion from Michelle Miller-Han*censored*

The Bulletin Board

Hi Alumni ~
I am one of those who made reunion for the first time after 42 years. I can't believe where the time has gone, but the memories were all fresh and vivid once I figured out who everyone is. The nametags were a lifesaver!! I enjoyed seeing everyone and "getting caught up" after all these years.
Just briefly, Bucky took us on campus Saturday afternoon. I was dreading it but had to force myself to go see what I anticipated would be a shocking trip. Indeed it was just that. I still gasp every time the vision crosses my mind. I do believe with the leadership of Mayor Johnson and a solid plan driven methodically and supported by the citizens of Wahoo and the dual alumni of Luther College and JFK College that we may have once last chance to give honor to a legacy that deserves far more that how it stands today. On a more personal level, I find it appalling that there has been a loss of at least two lives on the JFK Campus and the ultimate directive of at least one other departed whose ashes are spread there. This makes it hallowed ground by my definition and I won't give up working to make even the slightest difference in their names and for our memories.
I've been very busy this week but did manage creating a mental project plan that I drew up and offered to Mayor Johnson earlier today. I believe there was another Town Hall Meeting tonight that included the issue of campus property. I was unable to attend but am awaiting to hear from the Mayor to see if there is movement among minds in some direction that leads to property improvement as a long term investment for Wahoo, each of the dual alumni and to a fair solution for its present owner. I have a 30+ year professional career in Event Planning, Design and Production and realize it takes times to influence change, persuade compromise and engage the right forces politically and financially to achieve something that rests on such a grand scale as the Luther/JFK campus property.
Carl Wirth has served as the most amazing historian. His storytelling is as clear today as it was in its moment. Your contributions and passion across time Carl absolutely takes my breath away. Thank you so very much for keeping it all alive for us. To Bucky, Lynette and those who have served to pull off the earlier reunions..I can only express regret in not knowing about them but clearly understand all it took from each of you to make these events happen.
Going forward, if we can bring the citizens of Wahoo and the dual alumni of Luther and JFK together for what I see as a pivotal, passionate exercise in rescue of a special place and time, we can all be part of rewriting history and giving it a voice that will be heard from Wahoo to Washington DC and beyond.
When time comes to launch these efforts, any extra help, hands, minds, talent, expertise and courage will be welcomed. Did you notice I didn't ask for your money? Getting the job done without a budget becomes part of our story and for very good reasons that will reveal themselves later. Meanwhile, everyone keep in touch best as you can and watch the Kennedy website for postings and updates.
Have a great time Bucky. You deserve some R & R.
My best to all,
Michelle Miller-Han*censored* (1966-1968)

Jim Bronson

The Bulletin Board
A Note from Bucky

I am writing to all of you to let you know about Jim Bronson, class of "70".
I received word this morning from Jim's sister Sandy that Jim passed away last evening at home with Cynthia.

I know that most of you knew Jim and his family.  Jim's parents were very involved in helping to get JFK started and Bill, Sandy, Jim, all attended.  They were  a very important part of the JFK family and a fantastically wonderful group of people.  Their home was always open to everyone and while there you were made to feel welcome and special.

In October of last year Jim was diagnosed with brain cancer.  He had been fighting valiantly but after recent surgery polyps were found in his intestines that are also cancerous.  Of course this made the fight that much harder.

Jim will be remembered by Mike and I as a gentle giant, full of humor and always looking for his next adventure.  May God's blessings follow him on the one he is about to take.  He will be missed by many.

Please keep Cynthia and the family in your thoughts and prayers.  I know that cards and e-mails would be much appreciated.  Jim's  address is 15605 Copper Correl Drive, Plattsmouth, NE  68048. Cynthia's e-mail address is
cympbronson@yahoo.com

Thank you all so very much,
Bucky (Linda Buckendahl Collins)
Class of "70"
